Outdoor Living in South Fort Myers, FL
South of downtown Fort Myers, between McGregor Boulevard and the Six Mile Cypress corridor, Backyard Paradiso builds screened lanais and pergolas, paver patios and pool decks, outdoor kitchens, turf, and evening lighting in the neighborhoods of South Fort Myers: Whiskey Creek, McGregor, Cypress Lake, Pine Manor, and the communities around them.
South Fort Myers is served through the Naples & Southwest Florida market on the Markets We Serve roster. It isn’t a city. South Fort Myers is Planning District 15 in unincorporated Lee County, so Lee County, not the City of Fort Myers, handles permits and planning here. The district takes in several Census places, among them Cypress Lake, Whiskey Creek, McGregor, Villas, and Pine Manor, with the Caloosahatchee River along its western side.
Why Backyard Paradiso in South Fort Myers
The Backyard Paradiso team is a full-service South Fort Myers contractor. In Southwest Florida, a backyard has to hold up to summer storms, salt air, and hurricane season while still giving shade in the heat, so structure, drainage, and screening are designed as one system. Lee County permits and any association approvals are handled along the way. Site assessments scheduled by appointment.
Services in South Fort Myers
Much of the work here centers on the screened, shaded space off the back of the house. Outdoor structures mean screen enclosures and motorized screens first, then pergolas, retractable awnings, decks, railings, and fencing. On the ground, turf, hardscape, and landscape work runs to pool decks, paver patios, walkways, and synthetic lawn that stays green through the dry season. Cooking and gathering fall to outdoor entertaining, with kitchens, fire features, and umbrellas. Seasonal and specialty takes care of lighting, year-round and seasonal, and pools and recreation is part of the offer too.
What South Fort Myers' conditions mean for a project
Southwest Florida brings a long wet season of afternoon storms and lightning, heavy humidity, and hurricanes. The three highest storm surges ever recorded at the Fort Myers gauge all came recently, from Ian in 2022 and Helene and Milton in 2024. Ground here is low and sandy, with a high water table. For the build:
- Screen enclosures, pergolas, and awnings get hurricane-rated anchoring.
- Near the river, fasteners and hardware are chosen for salt air.
- Paver and pool-deck bases are set for sandy, wet ground and graded so storm water drains away quickly.
- Metal structures are grounded against lightning.
Wind-speed and code detail for the region are on the Naples & Southwest Florida market page.
County and regional bodies a project meets:
- Permits: Lee County Community Development, Building & Permitting Services. There’s no city government in South Fort Myers.
- Water: Lee County Utilities, which sets the county’s outdoor watering rules. UF/IFAS Extension Lee County runs the Florida-Friendly Landscaping program.
- Historic review: the Lee County Historic Preservation Board, for designated resources in unincorporated Lee County.
- Flood and coastal mapping: FEMA flood maps, administered by Lee County Floodplain Management, and the county’s Coastal High Hazard Area map, which covers parts of the Caloosahatchee side.
- Local service units: county units such as the Town & River Improvement Unit and the Pine Manor streetlighting district serve specific neighborhoods.
A property-by-property check at the first visit shows which of these apply.
Five Census places, one planning district
The Census doesn’t publish figures for South Fort Myers itself, so the housing picture comes from the places inside it (2024 ACS five-year estimates):
- Whiskey Creek: median year built 1979, and 66 percent detached houses, the most single-family of the group.
- McGregor: median 1984, and about 54 percent detached.
- Cypress Lake: median 1986, with most homes in multi-unit buildings.
- Villas: median 1984, also mostly multi-unit.
- Pine Manor: median 1976, the oldest of the five.
For contrast, San Carlos Park to the south has a 1988 median and is 79 percent detached, and the Village of Estero’s median is 2004.
The pattern is an established area built mostly in the 1970s and 1980s, with single-family neighborhoods set among condominium and apartment communities. Whiskey Creek and McGregor carry most of the stand-alone houses, which is where most backyard projects happen. A 1980s ranch with a screened pool cage asks for different work than a newer lot with open lawn, so each design begins with the lot as it stands.
Neighborhoods, communities, and the Fort Myers name
Named communities in the district include Seven Lakes, Gardens at Riverwalk, Reflection Lakes on Cypress Lake Drive, and Town & River in the western core. Seven Lakes and Reflection Lakes have their own associations, and Town & River has a civic association.
A few nearby names cause mix-ups:
- The City of Fort Myers, with its Dean Park, Edison Park, and Seminole Park historic districts and its downtown riverfront, is a separate municipality.
- San Carlos Park, Gateway, Iona/McGregor, and the Daniels Parkway area are separate county planning areas. McGregor the Census place and Iona/McGregor the planning district are different.
- Estero is its own incorporated village.
- North Fort Myers and Fort Myers Shores are different places altogether.
- A Fort Myers mailing address doesn’t put a property inside the City of Fort Myers.
Lakes Park, the Yarbrough trail, and the Slough
County parks shape outdoor life here:
- Lakes Park, off Gladiolus Drive, is organized around its lakes, with walking and cycling paths, fishing, paddlecraft access, playgrounds, and picnic areas.
- Rutenberg Park, on South Pointe Boulevard, has baseball and football fields and basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts.
- Hunter Park in Pine Manor is a smaller neighborhood park for walking, cycling, and picnics.
- John Yarbrough Linear Park runs north to south as a multi-use trail for walking, cycling, jogging, and birding, with access from Colonial Boulevard, Crystal Drive, Daniels Parkway, and Six Mile Cypress Parkway.
- Just east, in the Daniels Parkway area, the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve has a boardwalk through forested wetland, with ponds and observation decks. Lee County voters chose to protect it in 1976.
Each autumn, the Lakes Park Enrichment Foundation and Lee County Parks & Recreation fill Lakes Park with Scarecrows in the Park, part of the park’s fall festival. A backyard in South Fort Myers usually takes a similar cue: shade, a breeze, and a place to be outside in the evening once the day cools.
Starting a South Fort Myers project
The team’s first visit checks:
- the house, the existing lanai or pool cage, and how the yard gets used
- where water goes after a summer storm
- whether the lot sits in a mapped flood zone or the coastal high hazard area
- any association rules for the community
- whether the address is county territory or inside the City of Fort Myers
A handful of yard photos with the request saves time. From there, the team prepares a concept design and a written scope.
